AW9D-Max RAID controllers ... arg

Hi,

New motherboard, AW9D-Max has two RAID controllers -

Intel Matrix Storage
Sil 3132

I successfully migrated a RAIDed pair of maxtor drives (RAID 0) to the Sil RAID controller, only because it was previously on a Sil RAID controller. It recognised the RAID pair. woot, i thought.

Now, i've added another pair of maxtor 250s to the Intel Matrix Controller.

So in BIOS change the setting for the Intel Matrix Storage to enable RAID, and this enables the Intel Matrix RAID boot rom. I configured the two disks. fine.

But, it only seems to boot into ONE or the OTHER raid bioses. In other words, with the Intel Matrix RAID controller now enabled, i don't get the Sil RAID bios and hence the Sil RAIDed disks don't appear in POST.

With Intel Matrix in IDE mode, it controls only the DVD Writer. And i get the Sil RAID controller bios option available, and it boots into the Sil RAID pair.

With Intel Matrix in RAID mode, it controls the DVD writer and the newly RAIDED, but blank maxtor drives. BUT it cannot see the Sil RAID pair ??

No where does it say the controllers are mutually exclusive and i can't believe they would advertise, hey, you got 2 RAID controllers but can only use one or the other.

What am i doing wrong.

I have only changed Intel Matrix to either Auto or Combined mode, which allows SATA1-SATA4 as RAID, the DVD on IDE.

I've also left the Sil untouched, ie still enabled. FYI its SATA5 and SATA6 that the Sil is controlling. Why can't i see all the disks at boot time ?

thank heaven's for norton ghost 8.0.

I disabled the Intel Raid. used ghost 8.0 to copy OS image to DVD.
I enabled the Intel Raid. used ghost 8.0 to retsotre the OS image from DVD to Intel RAID.

Booted into windows (Intel RAID).

Windows can see the Sil SATA Raid drives.

so why not at boot time
