Hey folks..hopefully my fellow overclockers can solve my ongoing problem..i bought a golf mk4 1.4 S 2000 earlier this year and not really had any major problems apart from the awful MPG!!..im getting around 15-20 mpg wherever i go..ive got the car up for sale now because ive had enough of spending money on petrol everytime i go out heres the things ive done to rectify the problem:

Full service
kept tyres pumped to optimum level
New 02 sensor
Disconnected Egr Valve(check engine light was on before)
cleaned throttle body

What Would you suggest next??..new thermosat??.

any help would be much appreciated

thanks!!!

That makes no sense, on a decent trip, i.e more than 20minutes, is it at temperature?

Or are you one of these people that ignore the temperature guage?

How many miles are you doing per trip?

You say the warning light was on before the EGR change? Did you get the fault codes read?

Jesus, you are quite possibly the least helpful person when it comes to helping other people help YOUR problem...

We're asking you the questions to figure out if it is your thermostat...

Tell us what the temperature is!

If its dropping significantly when the car is moving and only reaches normal running (most VAG cars appear to run at 90°c) when stationary then your thermostat is likely knackered.

Thermostat sounds likely. Are you sure your driving style isn't to blame? Measure it properly (full tank to full tank) across a longish journey and drive it like a granny. If its decent then, you're not driving it economically

If a mk4 golf isn't reporting a theoretical 90c and staying there after ten mins or so there is an issue - most likely the stat as above, get that sorted then revisit the situation - I've never had a stat make more than a few might impact when stuck open tbh but first things first

What kind of driving do you do? Kicking about town I would imagine 30mpg or so to be about right for a mk4 1.4 so maybe the stat would sort it if thats where you're measuring

That does seem awful. I got 120 miles from £20 when I had my 1.5 Yaris. I drove like Senna everywhere in that car, short trips too. If I drove economically I could get around 30miles more. I think I used to put in around 15L at the price it was at. The trip computer used to give me 35mpg, and on a long distance drive around 43mpg give or take a few mpgs. The car was great on fuel.

My current car 2.0 Impreza NA, has crap mpg. Worse so in this weather, so I doodle like a grandma in that. Driving style does make a big difference.
