Has anyone had any experience with B&Q kitchens and know whether or not they are flexible on prices or if it is fixed? Maybe things like upgraded appliances at same cost etc

Just got one and it's well built and just keep digging mate and you will get money off, wife did ours so not sure how much she saved etc.

Their design service isn't that amazing so if you do go down that route check it thoroughly to make sure it's actually workable before committing.

My parents had B&Q do their most recent kitchen. Planning/design all went fine (bar the tap being unsuitable, quickly rectified) but the installation was less good. They'd assumed a B&Q team coming to fit everything but it was all a bunch of independent contractors who seemed to have varying standards of work.

Whether that's still the case I couldn't say but do be aware of such things happening!

My boss had a B&Q kitchen, bathroom fitted about 18 months ago. They were absolutely shocking B&Q themselves and their local tradesmen they used. My boss had to take them to the local papers as one of his friends also had a kitchen fitted by them around the same time and there were problems with their kitchen aswell. I don't think I could count on my hands the amount of times B&Q have had to come to their house to repair something. Maybe it's just the area covered by this particular store but... I cannot recommend them

The guy in B&Q told me that there are skill levels 1-5, 1 being a handyman and 5 being a cabinet builder or something and they only employ 4-5 level. I was tempted to get a company in to fit it and get it on supply only but then I was a bit worried that if I get someone in and they don't do a perfect job I won't be able to go back to them as well as I would with b&q. I never have much luck with tradesmen!

Ive got a B&Q kitchen in one of my rental properties, its fairly decent for the money but Id never trust a B&Q 3rd party fitter anywhere near any of my properties as I know the clip of some of them. Obviously there are some exceptions to that but I wouldsnt risk it!

This has been some good advice thank you, maybe I will go against their fitters. I did think of Howdens, but am I correct in thinking I have to find some kitchen fitter who has an account at howdens for me to be even able to look into their kitchens?

We had our kitchen from Howdens.. but as you've stated they only sell to trade. Luckily our nextdoor neighbour is a carpenter and he put the kitchen on his account for us. He fitted the kitchen for us and we just settled up with them directly.

Yes, I would imagine all local fitters will have an account as they are very popular. I wouldn't rule out buying a kitchen from B&Q etc but I would research and contract your own fitter as you will likely get someone who has a business reputation to protect so an interest in doing a good job as opposed to the guy's b&q sub out to at the lowest possible rate.

MIL had one fitted a few years ago. The kitchen itself is nice but the installers drilled not one but 4 holes through the wall into the dining room next door, into variously a piano, a dresser and open space.

The installers are contractors and so the quality varies massively.

B&Q paid for the repairs/redecoration to the walls and various things eventually.

I'd never touch them after the issues friends have had with the quality and fitting.

One woman had it dragged out for 14 months before it was finally rectified. Being in the kitchen then just brings back all the hassle she had and she hates it now.

Can recommend Benchmarx, and that's based on problems which is when company's true colours come to light.

We swapped two cabinets, no problems, and replaced a broken panel (fitters fault), a door and a damaged carcass all within 24 hours, no real quibbles or questions.

diykitchens

couldnt recommend them enough. i measured, designed and ordered up mine all by myself and then installed them also, just got a carpenter to do the worktops.

could always get b and q to draw/plan, buy from diykitchens and self install or get a local chippy to install.

Ky kitchen is all from B & Q.

I designed and fitted it myself. 10 years later still going strong.

We had an excellent service from them. One of the higher-end framed ranges. Carisbrook I think. Design service was good, we had a contact i could ring directly, made many changes and emailed me updated docs.

3 points;
- Borrow a mates trade card for a discount (saved me quite a bit)
- They often have deals on - we got a free diswasher that I then immediately sold on an auction site for a few hundred more.
- Don't use their fitters. Expensive, and crap. We used a family friend who's been doing it for 30years.

Could always call into howdens and they will give you some numbers of suitable people.

Can't beat word of mouth for a trade though.

We've had a Wren kitchen place open here recently and I stuck my head in, really nice looking kit and was competitively priced too
