What's a realistic B-Road MPG figure for 3l petrol engines such as:
ST220
E46 330i
A3 3.2 Quattro

I'm doing about 70 miles a day on the back roads and just wondered whether it was financially viable for me to have this kind of engine doing the run instead of a boring diesel!

Cheers.

Depends what sort of driving, surely. Sit at 50mph in 5th and you'll probably get 35mpg, hoon it between bends using the entire rev range and you'll probably get 10 :p

I average 25mpg on my daily commute which is 17 miles each way comprising of 10 miles motorway, the rest town driving.

I could probably buy a diesel and double my MPG figure, but I don't want to.

I get 25mpg average from my 330ci driving sensibly on A roads (12mile commute, 8 on A road but 2 roundabouts that are slow and 4 on country roads at 60)

I don't think is a very sensible question, really. A B-road can range from a rural single-track lane to a dual carriageway. Your driving style is going to be rather different between them.

It's as sensible as I could make it really... :( Driving style will change if some plonker sits infront of me doing 30-40mph but the roads are mostly single track rurals. Just trying to get rough figures so I can see costs.

Your driving style will have a huge impact on this, to the extent where it isn't really worth asking other people!

I drive a country lane every day to work and back and under normal traffic conditions I get ~23. That drops to 19-20 if the road is clear and I'm driving quickly but sensibly or 8 if I put my foot down and banzai my way home. Put my Mum behind the wheel and it would probably return 26+ on the same road.

You could quite easily cover a stretch of road in an ST220 at 25-27mpg or 9-10 just depending on how you drive it!

What about non fuel running costs?
I was initially just thinking about fuel, if it immediately doubles the fuel bill, I see no point in doing it, I can look in to other costs after... If that makes any sense. Just putting the feelers out there for now.

I understand what you're saying, It'd be great if I could drive one for a whole day or something to get a proper idea.

I get 28mpg for all round driving, including a daily commute on almost exclusively B-roads. I don't hang about, even though I'm am a pretty frugal driver.

BMW 330Ci Sport (E46)

I was driving a Seat Leon FR 170PD (so not fully boring) until some stupid girl pulled out in front of me the end of last month... Used to get between 44-50mpg
