B550 Vision D / D-P for 5950x / Vision 3090 OC - performance?

Hi all,

I'm waiting for my 3090 Vision OC to arrive. I'm looking for something overkill to play games (fairly competitive PUBG) on a 4k 144hz monitor but happen to work in video so the 24gb shouldn't be too wasted on me. However I (think) I'd like lots of cores for work - mainly Resolve / Fusion / Blender / After Effects etc.

So for CPU I'm thinking a 5950x.

I'd also like thunderbolt 3 - at minimum a header so I can install a tb3 card but ideally 1 or 2 ports built into the motherboard. I have a pair of TB3 RAID setups I need to access (gtech studio XL 48TB x 2 - actually thunderbolt 2 but presume I can simply stick a converter in between). I'd also like to do things like run a BMD Ultrastudio 4K Mini and connect a few other tb3 peripherals.

So... AM4 plus TB3 =... as far as I can tell just one X570 (ASRock Creator) or various B550 - obviously the Vision D or Vision D-P would be great aesthetically to match my 3090 Vision OC.

I've read a few things about B550 not being the best choice for that CPU/GPU combo but wondered if anyone could be specific?

I'm not particularly interested in overclocking. I don't want to get into custom loops. I just don't want to find that I'm running stupidly high potential hardware at half speed or anything because of a motherboard.

Anyone like to take a stab at why to get or not get the B550 (or for that matter if there's anything else that needs changing)? RAM, although pretty, isn't the fastest for example. Is cooling OK with those 3 x 140 fans and an AIO?

cool - I don't want to lessen the lifespan of any components by running hot

oh yes and work, quick renders and smooth playback of complex video and animation but let's be fair that's an after thought after 5 years gaming in bootcamp.

I'm also looking at the B550 DP but cant find any UK stock at the mo. Thinking of ditching my Z490 for 5900x. How you getting on with your build?
 
Digging this one up from the grave.

This was the final build back in Feb 2021:
3950x / vision b550 d / vision 3090 / 64gb 3600 corsair vengeance rgb (2x32gb) / wd black sn850 2tb / noctua nh d15s / 4 x nf s12a / corsair 4000d airflow

It's done me very well but looking forward to a new ProArt themed build. The comment above on Threadripper/Pro is/was/remains absolutely correct, and I could find good prices for an older mid or upper mid range TR and board, but I've got a problem where it has to be latest and greatest. So a tolerable threadripper build would be about 12 grand and that doesn't tick all my boxes like many TBs of ssd/nvme storage.

Instead am looking at about £7k for a dual 4080 / x870e build with a couple of m2s and tons of sata ssds. Single 4080 outperforms my 3090 on PUBG (slightly lower top framerate but more consistent at lower power/temp/quieter fans) and then the second GPU kicks in when using Resolve and outperforms a single 4090 by about 30-40% according to all the export/render tests I've seen online.
