B6 Passat - Heavy Smoke only during DPF regen

So my Passat (2.0TDi CR, 149k) has started smoking heavily but only in one situation. During a dpf regen, which are getting more frequent now obviously due to the mileage, it will do the full James Bond smoke screen when re applying the throttle after coasting in gear. This is most noticeable at low speed and with low to moderate throttle application.

My first thought is a leaking injector dribbling in too much diesel during the secondary injection as it doesn't happen all the time?

Car in general is OK. Feels a bit gutless (nothing really new as it is the 110 engine) and it does have the occasional hiccup which feels a bit like a miss fire which it never used to do.

Any thoughts appreciated :)

Could be the EGR valve being a bit clogged, in which case I'd give it an Italian tune up. Get it on the motorway, wait until its nicely warmed up then open the throttle* as wide as you can a few times. Did this with the Xtrail to cure a warning light for the EGR, nice big battleship smoke screen the first few times but it gradually got less and less. Still smoked a bit under acceleration but the warning light disappeared :)

*I mean the pedal before a passing pedant lectures me on diesels/throttles.

Thanks for the advice. I have tried a bottle of Redex but it may be worth trying something else. I'm not massively worried as it is a company car, just trying to get my head round what might be up with it!

I wouldn’t worry about it too much, we’ve got a 60 plate MAN artic at work that does a similar thing - it has done nearly 2million Km mind you! - the thing has been like this for about 18months.

Given it’s a company car I really wouldn’t worry too much.

To be honest I'm more worried about whether it will be an issue for the personal trip I've got to Europe coming up!

I’d do this.....

The Wynns Diesel cleaners are highly recommended for both DPF and other minor issues:

Probably worth a shot?

Followed by this....

I doubt it would cause you to break down at the side of the road - the last thing you want especially in a foreign country - although given it’s a company car why not just speak to whoever looks after the fleet and get them to have it looked at?

That said, if your company is anything like mine then I guess they won’t want to shell out on an old motor that’s soon for retirement anyway!

I did mention it to work who said to book it in to be looked at but I'll probably hold off and get it looked at during the service which will be done in a few weeks anyway.

Ideally it will be enough to get them to either change it or, as I've requested, give me an allowance instead. If I've still got it next year it will be in the highest BIK bracket which is a bit of a joke!

Personally I’d get it done prior to the trip rather than possibly regretting it with the benefit of hindsight - why not just request something else from the pool for your trip?

I work for a very small company! Our pool is my car! Not making my trip until late November so it will get done before then anyway :)

Alternatively I could take our Punto but I'm not sure I have any more confidence in that really and that is a bit more hard work on a long trip.

Urgh... so no more smoke but it has been replaced by a DPF regen happening within 200 miles of each other and a vibration when accelerating. Looks like I'll have to start the merry go round of paying for an investigation to be told that the technician couldn't find anything wrong with it because it seemed fine on the lunch run with radio 1 turned up to the max. By the way that'll be £70 for the "diagnosis"...

Not that its my money of course but it doesn't look good on my expenses for the month!
