Ba companion voucher

My wife and I have a voucher each. Whilst trying to book return flights to NY, using one voucher + Avios points, it's showing £200 total. So I think one covers it but can't book to confirm yet as I need to process a name change.

Thanks all, any tips for finding business class seats?

Subscribe to SeatSpy - they continuously monitor availability and you can get email and text alerts when seats you want are available. Premium classes on popular routes can be difficult to get and it’s a lot more difficult than it should be but you can make it work.

From December 2021 to January 2023 my partner and I went to Vancouver, Mykonos, Iceland and the Maldives all in business class using Avios and companion vouchers, it just takes a bit of work and planning.

An alternative way is to book the flights you want in economy or premium economy, and then set alerts for business class seats should they become available. I did this for the Maldives trip with a premium economy return, and in the 6 months before the flights both routes had business class seats open up which I was able to upgrade to over the phone to the executive club. This allows you to book the accommodation knowing you definitely have flights.

In summary - SeatSpy is worth its weight in gold for using Avios and companion vouchers as the BA system is rubbish…

And yes, the vouchers are return flights for two.

That’s great advice. My other tips would be to book early and be flexible on where you want to go. Some routes (e.g. Australia) are nearly impossible to get reward flights on and some (e.g. the Caribbean) have a tonne of availability.

Definitely - all seats open up 350 days before the flight and popular routes (eg. Sydney) are gone almost instantly as people are waiting on the phone to the executive club as the clock strikes midnight so they can get the first class and business seats. Some even phone the Japan branch as open up first worldwide due to timezone differences…

The closer it gets to the flight though, more seats will open up as people cancel and BA increase availability. All flights have a minimum number of reward seats, but the6 do release more in the months before the flight so booking a lower class and upgrading does work.

If you just want to use them rather than go somewhere specific, try places they fly to a lot like NYC (15 flights a day etc)

BA guarantee 4 business class seats on every flight which are released 355 days before departure at midnight GMT (so 1am in summer time). You can book the outbound online when its released (make sure you select your companion voucher when doing this). When the inbound is released you can either call up and get it added to your existing companion voucher booking, or you can book the inbound online (make sure you apply the same avoid/fees combination when paying) and request afterwards that BA refund 50% of the avios to reflect the use of the companion voucher on the outbound. The downside of the latter approach is that you need to have twice the amount of avois available in the account to be able to initially book and you will have two separate reservations so its a bit more expensive if you need to cancel.

If you want to secure seats on the most popular routes (Singapore, Sydney, Maldives, Tokyo), especially at peak times of the year, you're probably going to need to book at 355 days out.

If you're not willing to do that (admitedly its a bit of a faff and not for everyone) then you have to be a bit more flexible in terms of where you want to go. As long as you're booking 10-12 months out you'll have a long list of options. For example looking at next January I had a quick search for half a dozen destinations and can see decent availibility for 2 seats to Jamaica, Santiago, Mexico City in business class and it's a good time of year to go to those places. In contrast there is nothing avaiable whatsover for Sydney.

Generally the US has lots of availbility, particularly the north east, so you can afford to book a bit later.

As another tip is you don't need to fly to/from the same destination when using the voucher, provided that the distance between your arrival and departure airports must be less than the distance of the flight back home. So if for example you can only see outbound availability to LA, but inbound availability from San Diego, you could book both flights using the companion voucher. It costs the same as a normal return. You need to call BA to do this though as it can't be done online.

Finally, the companion voucher opens up business class avios availibility that you can't see through the Reward Flight Finder tool or Seatspy etc. This is a really good perk as BA release a surprising amount of extra seats this way. Unfrotunately the only way of finding this availbility is searching manually on specific dates on the BA website after having selected your companion voucher.

you will need to call US or Japan as UK is closed

Done that many times but what a faff it is to get someone to understand what you need them to do

There’s no need - I’ve booked the return leg of a trip with the voucher and Avios, then added the outbound to it later on when a flight became available.

I voucher for return for 1 person

Book at midnight GNT 355 days ahead,

Well, you CAN use the newer ones for one person and half the Avios, but it’s one companion voucher for two people, hence ‘companion’…

If you can be flexible with dates and book at short notice then setting up a seatspy alert is a lot easier than the midnight lottery imo. Even on popular routes like the Maldives they do quite often release seats within a couple of weeks of departure, just need to keep an eye out.

Booking in premium economy then upgrading with new availability as someone said above is a great tip also.

re the first point, that's what I'm saying, I do that too but the staff often don't understand what you want to do

Not that when you select to use a BA voucher as part of the booking, it opens up somewhat more redemption availability than just searching for 2 seats without a voucher. So if seatspy says there is only 1 seat available, you might see 2 when you attempt a booking.

Wish I'd got on this bandwagon sooner. Just booked two return flights to New York for £200 instead of ~£1200 (50k Avios + companion voucher). And gatecrashing my wife's work trip so hotel is free. Result :D

Now I might actually have some spending money.

I feel your pain - 2022 had 4 holidays to Vancouver, Mykonos, Iceland and the Maldives, all in business class, all with avios and vouchers. Couldn't have done it for less if I paid for economy tickets...

As above, business is easily doable but you have to know well in advance and book asap 355 days in advance when they get released, although less popular destinations usually have availability long after they're released.

Although don't forget avios have value, so you want to aim to use the £350 per person taxes offering for long haul flights if it's available and the £70/100 for economy/business in Europe. Also the premium card has a better companion voucher than the blue card.

Booked two return flights, in economy, to Dubai from Edinburgh with 14 days notice.
The free BA Amex doesn’t allow business class flights, but £100 each to Dubai was a deal!

Routes from airports that aren't Heathrow usually have much better availability. How many avios did you use though as they are worth 0.6p each minimum so if you've spent 80,000 then it's actually £580 return for economy flights which tbh isn't great value.
