Does anyone know if a new variant of the the E21** series chips are coming out soon? I might be dreaming this, but im sure I read about it somewhere!

If it is, what exactly is it?

How much will it be approx?

Is there a date for release?

is it worth waiting for over a 2160?

Im looking to upgrade my HTPC, so was looking for a cheap cpu to play back hd-dvd at 1080i.

Is this gonna be a lot cooler/overclockable than the 2160?

my poor old skt 754 3400+ cant handle hd-dvd lags like hell @ 100% cpu usage :D
 
Both are good, just buy either when it is the time you want to build. I doubt there is much difference between the two, if the 10x multi is important to you then go for it.
 
It wont be, as I would like to try to keeop the heat down & cost. I'll overclock it to a level where HD-DVD 1080i plays without lagging. Hopefully that will be stock values!!!
 
There is also supposed to be a change to M0 stepping.....akin to the G0 stepping for the other Conroe/Kentsfield cpu's
 
means lower more efficient, lower wattage, and cooler :) (which generally leads to better clocking...)

kewl, so its worth waiting for then.

So in theory, it will be cooler clocked @ 2.4 than a 2160... nice for HTPC
 
its gonna take me a week or so to research a cheap C2D mainboard suitable for a cheap HTPC upgrade, gotta look at RAM, G-Card as well.


Just had a thaught! Will OcUK be dropping the price of the 2160 when the 2180 is launched?

If the 2160 has little price drop I would buy it over the incoming 2180

The e2160 is supposed to be reduced in price when the e2180 is released, and intel are supposedly dropping the e2140 from their range of processors. :)
