I have been down the rabbit hole of reading up on all the latest and greatest, and have come a little stuck on my CPU platform of choice.

The long and short of it, is that I've always preferred AMD and I like that they stuck to a platform for a long time (AM5 will be their first change in many years, and will be the platform going forward for quite some time by all accounts). They also happen to be a bit cheaper.

Intel on the other hand already has a platform which supports DDR5, and while I dont intend to build a PC with DDR5 memory, I like the idea that I have the option to upgrade down the line, should I have the use case for it.

Now, my questions to you guys; Given that I don't "need" to immediately buy anything, should I wait it out for the Zen 4 processors, buy a Zen3 now, or build an intel 12th gen now? I will never overlock, if that's a consideration.

My specs that I was thinking is as follows but happy to take on suggestions, given the above;
5800x
Gigabyte x570
Corsair 32gb 3600mhz
Msi Rtx 3080
Gigabyte 850w gold fully modular
1tb nvme SSD
Coolermaster 360mm (3x RGB fans) watercooler
Lian li O11 Dynamic EVO
3x lianli RGB fans (total 6 fans)

Intel's Alder Lake is better than Ryzen 5000 series right now.

I'd go with the 12700K based on the rest of your selection, In terms of waiting, you'll always be waiting for the next best thing so I'd just go with the Alder Lake.
The only real exception to that is if it's literally 2-3 weeks away and will mean significant performance difference.

What elder lake CPU would you recommend @0007 ?

12700K based on the rest of your build, but the 12600K would suffice aswell.

If you plan to keep it for a really long time then the 12900K wouldn't be a bad option aswell.
I definitely wouldn't go down the DDR5 route as the RAM cost isn't justifiable.

I mean at this point it seems worthwhile to at least wait out another 6 or 7 months to at least *see* what Zen 4 and raptor lake look like in actuality. You can still buy a Zen3 or Alder lake system then, at a nice discount too if you're nervous about AM5 platform bugs or DDR5 prices...

Don't expect DDR5 prices to drop too much with all the different market factors at the moment.
Won't come to anywhere similar DDR4, for the price/performance it just isn't worth it, and I don't think that will change in the short term.

Do we know if Intel will be changing their socket type for their 13th gen CPUs?
We know socket won't change for 13th, it will change with 14th.
New chipset will be released with 13th as Intel usually does. No massive improvements expected, some more PCIe lanes

You have not listed your requirements, except having a theoretical upgrade path.

If my system died right now, I would build for 5800X3D rumored to be released in March. Expecting it to match or beat 12700K in games.
Else would wait until both Zen 4 and Intel 13th release and make the decision then.

I'm still figuring out my requirements, but it's a gaming PC and I like the idea of longevity (dont we all).

If you don't 'need' to upgrade now, I would wait until the end of the year, as suggested already. Worst case, you can get a last gen at discounted price (e.g. black friday).

Thanks everyone - I'm quite tempted to get Alderlake 12600K now rather than waiting. Out of interest, I'm looking at a second hand sale, and the PC in question has an older gen Cpu: intel i7 10700KF @4.7-5.0ghz.

How much price difference would convince you to go second hand (the other PC is basically brand new with reciepts)?

Rest of the spec
