Now I'm not sure if this is the right section but I am thinking of making a render farm using some old PC's I have come across for next to nothing for the grand price of however much it costs for me to take them home.
The lowest spec of all of them is a Intel Core Duo E4500 with 2GB of Ram and I was wanting to know a couple of things.
1a. I need an idiots guide with a list of needed parts and extras apart from the machines(towers only here) and the 3ds max software on how to make one using windows 7 to windows XP as if these were clean installs and had been untouched so they have firewalls and everything active and untouched.
1b.Hopefully all I want to need to do is press to press the button to turn it on once it is set up properly then once windows loads it will automatically be part of the farm.
2a. I am using mental ray usually if I use distributed bucket rendering will the other machine be required to hold the entire scene or only know the bits they are sent?
2b. Does the main machine that is running all this (the manager) need to have enough ram for the entire scene.
If any of this confuses you due to my terrible lack of grammar please give me a post or PM
If you don't know how but do know a site where I can continue to try and track down answers it would be much appreciated.
