Yes link away, as long as its not a OcUK competitor and does not have swearies in it your fine :)

Rich, Its good to see you old chum

Got to sort out this wireless networking gubbins first.. never had it before and attempting to solve signal strength issues.. lovely. And i find my experience with wired isnt much use, except as a backup to get conection to my new laptop (love it)

Then comes the overhaul. My old SETI crunchers have become.. a little shaky in the time i've been gone, they need software work, and the old wired network needs integrating with the wireless, shouldnt be too much of a pain if i can get the wireless working. Still got (running) my XP-M1600 and the P4, and the XP2100 (the free pc - Diogenese, that chip and ram still work daily for me :D ). I might get back to some form of crunching fairly soon, but i'll be looking for something that my old stuff is good for.

I intend to get some new, probably core2duo based rig going for my new gaming/entertainment setup, and probably keep the XP-M rig going as a server(and cruncher) to store my VAST amounts of media (god bless perpendicular storage :D) so it depends on how competitive these new systems are. Won't be crunching on the laptop. Period. sounds slack but no.

The P4 (pres 3.2) will probably replace the XP2100 as a second desktop rig for general use (dedicated cruncher)

I can't/won't have vast amounts of PC's laying around anymore, so i'm just going to have to make the few i will have very, very powerful.. Core2Quad, anyone :D

Good to see you back, Sah!

Those Quads make nifty ET-hunters - my Q6600 running at 3GHz has a current RAC of over 4500, using the chicken's enhanced app :D

Compared to my hyperthreaded P4 Northwood, that can't get to 900, again running the enhanced app, this time at 3.1GHz :)

Once the price cuts kick in...

<fx> Mrs Gojira thumps Mr Gojira at the mere thought of another upgrade! :D </fx>

thankyou sah. a comparison between todays machines, and the last spec machines i know (preshot, barton.. first XP64s). The CPU section is interesting. Seems a E4300 core2duo is a pretty good o'cing chip. Although.. why everyone talks about DDR2 6400 memory being the choice is a mystery.. wouldn't 8500 be easier to oc with? doesnt seem much more expensive either.. or am i an old DDR1 stickinthemud? I quite fancy the idea of taking a duo to 3.6ghz and beyod though.. that sounds good for my gaming rig :)

I think i'm going to be moving away from SETI though.. I'm considering folding, you hear that, RICH? i'm coming for ya.

:D

EDIT: I get withering looks from my computery mates when i enquire as to their thoughts on new stuff.. See they're not our kind of people. These are people who buy "a chip, some memory, a drive, a box, and a motherboard"

I'm thinking Uber powerful intel core2, mental ram, asus/dfi mobo, 37" LCD(tv..shh), dunno on graphics cards, they're all a bit confusing.. lol in a case that wont look out of place on my hifi rack, with good cooling - as powerful as i can go whilst retaining quietness. Watercooling isnt for me. i tried it ages ago but its too much messing about.

it'll be a cruncher most of the time, as playing movies/music isnt too demanding... if i can ever get it going.. I HATE WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER

yay winamp :D

i imagine it'd take me like, ages to catch up even to your slack self, even with my skill and supreme genius and just general awesomeness.

o well..

damn i bet that silverstone case is expensive.. i'll probably just sort out an old desktop case.. modded of course lol

im not spending loads of money on pcs, because i just dont have it. I'm not even sure if i can justify getting a top gfx card.. i have a ps2.. maybe in a couple of years.

For now i just aim to get something reliable and fast and suitable for media/light gaming. i have other projects (building the cheapest car in the world) so it's.. going to take time. Plus i'm broke. Hopefully my little evil masterplan will come to fruition and everything will be cool by xmas :(

I just specced up my ideal new entertainment and server rigs, and additional hardware i really want.. Yes.. now to go get three grand  nothings changed with bloody pcs

EDIT: I have a masterplan. top secret. to get money for: dunno when but one day im going to go on a shopping spree and blow that kind of wedge on pcs just to see what you get for that money  :D

I'm just going to walk into ocuk shop and put it down with a list of what i want

EDIT2: He says "i'm not spending loads of money on pcs" then specs up 2 machines, 6 cores, 4gb ram, loads of other stuff, all top quality, worth 3 grand.. lol well it's only early morning dreamery but yeah, kinda pointless :(

I'm in the same boat - young, gifted, and broke :o :p

It won't take much for you to match my weekly output though - suffering through lack of machines which will run the SMP client :(

its about £120 - but that inc the media centre software and display.
The other siverstones desktops are around the £50-90 bracket so reasonable for a new case.
If your going to mod the case - coolermaster ATC 610 SX1 (the bay has them for peanuts) so/so cooling and heavy but a dremmal and some 120mm fans will sort that :D

Yeah I've got a REALLY old desktop case, from, like, a cyrix P1 system i took in part exchange on a new build ages ago.. There was no fan holes originally, but loads of space.. a mate of mine has a plasma cutter(for those who don't know, that's like a cool, cutting version of a MIG electric welder, which blows gas at great pressure at the superheated material to blow the middle line out and cut - we're all car/camper/land rover/kit car obsessives, builders and modifiers and restorers), that makes blowholes really easy (good, considering this is one of them old cases with 2.5mm thick steel case lid and chassis, you know, the kind you can stand a car on.. very well laid out too. The fascia is bland but that's good for what i want.. i'm looking at paint/powdercoat combinations, and possibly plate/anodising - i live in sheffield - we know our metal :D -

It weighs about 17kg empty, but it'll be a good solid, good looking, and cool running case. It's full ATX too. I aim to get as few fans as possible.. probably 2 as a max

Hi Lazy :) glad the 2100 is still alive, Boy that CPU has worked hard for it's living:D I could probably upgrade it to an xp2500m if you want.

Vdub campers, kit cars AND landrovers, you really are a glutton for punishment! all you need now is an MGB for the full set of "cars that never get put back together";)

hehe i dont like vw campers too much, thats a mate. I'm into cars/mods/kits/land rovers

Don't say that about landies :p it's true but even so..

Mine is.. er.. in pieces atm. It's a 1972 SIII Diesel.. I drove it back from scotland with a knackered gearbox and a dying engine (40mph absolute top, on a slight decline) - to sheffield, with no radio. not fun. Some parts of it are beyond redemption, the rest is 5*.

I'm going to convert it to 5spd, and fit a transit 2.5 engine- gots a plan, get engine and gearbox from damaged cars and sell rest of parts for extra £ for the landie - more power, reliable, and it'll be 3 times as economical. I'm going to mod it, just add those modern touches.. heater that works, leccy windows, aircon, stereo, HID lights, CSW kit, comfy suspension & tyres etc :D

tax exempt too. And it'll save me £400 a year on insurance

:D

Sounds very, very smart. Pics and a log if possible :)

If i dont ruin it.. It was supposed to be my practice with the cutter. If you can cut blowholes, vents etc you can chop up a rotten land rover chassis.. lol
