Right, so my mate decided to buy some new PC3200 ram for his system (Foxconn 6479MB, P4 3Ghz and 7300gt.) Took the 2 x 512mb sticks out, put the 2x 1gb sticks in, turned it on, and kerblamo. Nice plume of smoke etc etc. That was the end of that.

So, hes now gone off and brought a new one, leaving me to mess around with the broken one. Hard drive works, 7300gt works. Havent tried PSU, got a spare one instead. Was trying to find foxconn beep code as turning it on gives me about 3-5 seconds worth of short bleeps. Can't find what it means but guessing it translates into 'its doomed'. However, the CPU fan worked.

I had to use a 20 pin PSU for a 24 pin MB but it says in the manual (with conveiniently no beep codes) that thats fine. So slightly confused. What are the chances the CPU is ok??

the processor is protected by the VRM so it is safe to say that it is ok unless the VRM is burnt or something like that.

Can't see any visible damage. Google search has revealed:

Continuous Short Beeps - Power Supply Failure

So guessing I need to get a 20 to 24 pin adaptor......
