Hi there,

Just bought some new bits and pieces and I am back overclocking after a few years off

So, current spec

i5-3570K
Gigabyte Z77-D3H
Samsung 120GB SSD
Patriot Viper (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9
Corsair TX 750w psu
XFX Radeon HD 6950
Noctua NHU12P with new bracket (so on air)

I had no idea where to start so just read a few guides and rashly made some changes, essentially I did this

1) disabled CPU enhanced halt, c3/c6 state support and cpu EIST
2) Changed cpu clock ratio to 48 (4.8ghz)
3) Changed system memory multiplier to 26.00 (2600mhz)
4) Changed mem timing to CL 12 13 13 32 command rate to 2
5) Upped Vcore to 1.340v
6) DRAM voltage to 1.660v

System booted no worries at 4.8 ghz but BSOD in 3Dmark11, I jumped back into the bios and dialed back the cpu clock ratio to 45.

System booted at 4.5 ghz and just ran 3Dmark11 no problems (only 1 pass to get a general feel).

I also tried prime95 but temps quite hot (80c-90c), I was measuring on realtemp, but as soon as I switched off prime the temps jumped back 30c instantly so not sure how accurate it is.

So are any of these settings wrong or should they be dialed back?
Once I get a stable clock should I turn back on CPU enhanced halt, c3/c6 state support and cpu EIST?

Any tips?

Thanks for any help, Rossco

Your Vcore seems a little high to me running at 4.5 try lowing that a bit then prime it

Iv not been on air for a long time.. Think about watercCooling it for far better temps

I would most likely try to overclock with the ram at default and with the XMP profile selected before jumping in at the deep end.
Try to get what your happy with with lowest volts.
Once your happy with the cpu clock then start on the ram, thats what i would do anyways.

I think I did jump in a bit at the deep end. Is there any decent guides out there? I have looked around and I think I need an idiots guide!!

I have had a few weeks away from overclocking but had an hour to spare today so I have had another go.

I have not mucked around with the memory at all this time. In fact all I have done is change CPU clock ratio to 45, so the system is now at 4.5ghz, all the power saving options are disabled for now but I will switch them back on once I have a stable overclock (good or bad idea?). I have read lots of guides now and some have been suggesting leaving the CPU VCore at auto, so this is what I have done.

Currently I have been running prime95 for about an hour with realtemp and cpuid running keeping an eye on things. So far so good on prime95. According to CPUID the VCore is at 1.260 but has been to 1.272. My CPU temps are generally in the 70's with the max at 82c (on core 1 and 2).

I will see how things progress. I am assuming if I do have a problem should I start the VCore at 1.272v manually and try again? Is there anything else I should do? What about the temps, are they okay?

Thanks

I ended up leaving the machine for four hours of prime95 and after a few hours of the witcher2 things still seem fine. Just been playing some fm, so not exactly intensive and temps are around 50c so I guess its pretty stable at 4.5ghz

I will have ongoing issues with heat, as I have to keep my base unit in my desk, which is a wooden affair. So basically, my pc lives in a wooden box, which although the front door is open on it and there is a hole for cables out the back it is not great for heat dissipation. I end up leaving the side of my machine now although I bet if I put it back on the temps would climb quickly!! I guess there not really a solution for that other than changing desks.

I probably shouldn't push much harder or heat really will stop me in my tracks. But I could have a go at the memory, although I am not really sure what I am doing yet.
