hi guys,

been asked to fix a screen on a laptop. I don't think it's the LCD thats gone, but probably the back light or inverter as i can see a dark image if i look closely.

how do i find out which i need to replace? i'd rather not buy both bits.

laptop is an acer aspire 5532

easiest way is, if you have another laptop screen on hand, even a broken one, just plug in teh screen to the invertor, if the backlight works on the 2nd screen, its the backlight.

alternatively get teh invertor first, as its a lot cheaper than a new screen

i realise inverter is cheaper than a screen. my question is inverter or back light.

do all screens work from the same inverters then?

Invertors aren't standard (although they won't be unique to a particular laptop).

It's much more likely that it's a failed backlight.

If you're replacing the screen then remove it and work from the LCD's model number rather than the model of laptop.

oh so is the backlight part of the screen? i assumed it was a separate component like the inverter.

ok, still tempted to order an inverter first, they're only £14 off ebay, screen is £55+

The backlight is part of the panel. In theory it is possible to dismantle the panel and replace the tubes but it isn't very practical on an amateur basis.

In my experience it's nearly always the inverter, but it can be the screen too which the back light is part of as mentioned above. Go with the inverter and if its still the same resell for a minimal loss, and go for a screen.

Thanks. Yeah I have mate.

Beginning to think it's the mainboard or something but another £3 won't hurt I guess:o
