No idea to be honest, ive never heard that expression before. Id have to ask them for a specific time.

to me the back of five would be half past 5

Edit - though to my mum its quarter past. Much to my annoyance when she wanted a lift somewhere at the back of five, bloody wanting a lift 15min early

I'd consider it to be 4.30-5pmish but no one really uses it and if they did I wouldn;t rule them out usuing it differently.

I take it to mean towards the end of the hour. So getting on for 6ish

Not precise enough and can get confusing. so if anyone uses it. give them a slap and ask for a proper time.

It's the back end of 5 o'clock

Some people here say back of five being a few mins after 5. I resist the urge to use it personally.

I would consider it to be 'just after' 5. I.e. 5 o'clock comes, and goes. As it goes past it's now the back of 5.

I never use it but some people do.
