"Back of an hour"

No idea to be honest, ive never heard that expression before. Id have to ask them for a specific time.

At a guess 5.59?

to me the back of five would be half past 5

Edit - though to my mum its quarter past. Much to my annoyance when she wanted a lift somewhere at the back of five, bloody wanting a lift 15min early :)

I take it to mean towards the end of the hour. So getting on for 6ish

Not precise enough and can get confusing. so if anyone uses it. give them a slap and ask for a proper time.

Some people here say back of five being a few mins after 5. I resist the urge to use it personally.

I would consider it to be 'just after' 5. I.e. 5 o'clock comes, and goes. As it goes past it's now the back of 5.

I never use it but some people do.
