my setup

cpu - intel core 2 duo E8500 @ 3.16ghz
motherboard - gigabyte EP45c-DS3R
Ram - 4gb Corsair DDR2 PC2-6400 (400mhz ram)
Graphics Card - NVIDIA GeForce 8800GTS 320mb
PSU - Corsair HX520w
OS - win7 ultimate 32bit

Looking for a graphics card upgrade dont want to change much/anything else unless i really have to. Any ideas on the best card that my setup can handle and best value card. I want to play bf3 etc at 1920x1080. Havent played pc games in nearly 2 years so any help with what i need to get back gaming would be great!

Any help welcome cheers!

my gigabyte EP45c-DS3R takes both ddr2 + ddr3 could replace ram with 1600mhz Corsair Vengeance blue and skip on mobo but would it be wise? what disadvantages does my board have?

Spot on.

I have played BF3 on ultra (no AA) with a Q8400 @ 3.2ghz, DDR2 mem and a 560TI and the frame rate was smooth.

Like Stulid says, get the GPU and if you are not happy with that, go for a Q chip or maybe time to upgrade completely.

oh happy days, if it runs smooth thats good enough for me

hey all, update on my upgrades. No punching in the face here but i went for a sapphire 6950 2gb card (it was cheaper than the 560ti and from what i read they seem similar in benchmarks) Its getting delivered tomorrow and BF3 might even arrive tomorrow aswell :)

Also upgraded to win7 64bit also my Ram - 4gb Corsair DDR2 PC2-6400 shows 400mhz ram in cpu-z but have since learned that it is actually 800mhz but a bug in cpu-z that shows 400? not sure if this is 100% but the model number on my ram shows that it is 800mhz

been looking into oc my cpu aswell, I have seen a few people that have changed the FSB from 333mhz to 400mhz resulting in 3.8mhz with out changing voltage etc. I have only looked into this recently and as you can imagine probably from reading this i am a complete noob :(

I have downloaded OCCT to stress test any changes ive been making, I also have easytune6 that was bundled with the mobo, (have updated the software to latest version) this allows me to change the FSB with out entering the bios, i know from reading a bit that this method is not as good as going in to the bios and changing it manually but again, new to this and dont want to start frying components before my card arrives.

with out overclocking my cpu i ran a stress test for 10 mins and it shows max temp is 85 degrees at max load, surely this is too hot for a standard e8500 with factory settings? ive checked on intels website http://ark.intel.com/products/33911/Intel-Core2-Duo-Processor-E8500-(6M-Cache-3_16-GHz-1333-MHz-FSB) and it states 72.4°C. is that a max temp they suggest or is that the temp that the cpu or mobo will throttle back the cpu to reduce temps?

thanks all

Cool thanks for that, yh im using stock fan any ideas on a decent fan upgrade? Ill get on with the cleanin and take the side off the case and see how it gets on!

Lol @ chinman

thanks for the reply, fan looks good!

Got my 6950 2gb and played bf3 there woahwee lol looks so much better than the 360! I was running it on ultra aswell at 1920x1080 a little tiny stutter (not enuff to trouble me) im guessing its a bottleneck from the cpu? think ill get that fan and try to oc the cpu
