Hi guys,

Since converting to mac a few years back I've hardly touched Windows, but after recently buying a netbook (Samsung N210) I am running windows 7 (very nice it is too :))

Anyway, I have a user account, as does my wife... now I've installed chrome and ccleaner so far, but they are not available for my wife to use... surely everything doesn't need downloading and installing twice?

I know there is a simple answer to this but bear with a born-again noob :D

if the programs arnt available to her, try navigating to your account from hers and find the installer, im runing win 7 but dont have another account lol but they shoud be available to her on the start menu

Google Chrome is a per-user installation as opposed to a system global one which means the account which you install it from will only ever be the account which has access to the program. Per-user installations are quite far and few between though and the vast majority of applications will create a directory under C:\Program Files and keys under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE which require administrative privileges since they're system global locations and will affect all users on the system.

As far as CCleaner goes though, since it's a system global installation, it doesn't matter which account you install it from, all users on the system will have access to the program. Have you had a look under C:\Program Files to see if you can see a CCleaner's directory?

Well you won't have to download Chrome/Ccleaner twice just put it on a memory stick etc. and re-install using her account. Why would you both need ccleaner? Chrome I understand but an admin/clean-up tool on both accounts?

in the other account, start, run (windows key + R)

type in..

ccleaner

press enter

that's how I open it, should work for all users

yep I worked that one out, it is there in the Program Files dir but theres just no start menu shortcuts... its fine this way...

When I left the world of Windows I was using XP, so the jump to Mac OS X (10.5 at the time) was massive, but its gotta be said they've done a good job with 7, loads better than Vista and quite a pleasure to use :)

I'm happy to use both now, I won't stray from Macs at work but when there isn't a need to spend mega $$$ on a system a Windows 7 setup will do just nicely :)

(Never got into linux either, maybe that has come along recently I'll have to give it a go :D)

Now you have located CCleaner, you can promptly uninstall it. :D It truly isn't something which is needed to maintain a Windows installation to an excellent standard. Make sure both you and your wife are using Standard User accounts, keep Windows and any other software which you may have installed up to date, take care while surfing the web and don't install every application you can get a hold off and your system will be fine.

Come on Fire. CCleaner does a great job. The Registry cleanup may be unnecessary, but having a tool which nukes temp/useless files is very good - it covers more than the standard Disk Cleanup tool too.

Shall we carry on the discussion in this thread here since I think it will be slightly more appropriate. :)

I suspect this problem is becasue of the fact that those two particular apps don't add themselves to
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu
and instead add themselves to
C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu

If you right click the All programs menu on the start menu you can open All Users or Users. I believe simply copying the start menu files between the two will allow your other half to see the apps on her start menu.

This issue has been in all version of windows for as long as I can remember
