I was hoping may car wouldn't provide me with any expenses in the next year as i'm hoping of getting rid of it in the summer.

i knew the exhaust wasn't in the best shape and this was proven when the back box completely detached itself last night. Its still hooked on to the underside of the car by a hook near the outlet pipe, but the actual box is hanging down and now longer attached to the middle box.

So...
If i manage to remove the back box can I still drive the car?? (i imagine there will be a lack of power and some major noise). However, is it legal, and also is there a likelihood the rest of it will detach as well?

Also is there any chance i could weld the old back box back on? Or at least get someone else to weld it on for me!!

Thanks

You can drive it - but it'll make one hell of a racket and the Police might not be impressed, neither will your neighbours.

As for fixing it - no, it's dead.

If there is still bit of pipe on the box then you could temporarily sleeve it back together with an exhaust repair wrap and some jubilee clips. If it has rotted off right at the flange then it's a new backbox job really.

I drove for 200 miles without my exhaust on my Clio 172 Cup. The noise was extreme and I was deafened. Police didn't batter an eyelid I even passed some in traffic.

yeah i don't mind a new backbox...just really DON'T want a whole new exhaust system. However, i fear it maybe heading that way.

Its a crap car, and i feel i'm throwing money down the drain.

Any ideas on where to get a cheapo exhaust for a 1993 Fiesta Diesel? I could go second hand, however, i have a feeling that may cause more problems and draw out the process further.

You can't sell the car without a back box.

Just go to nearest motor factors place if you're happy to get your hands dirty (easy job - 10 mins max).

Or Kwik fit. Remember to haggle.

how much do you reckon to have

- the backbox fitted
- the whole system fitted

so i know what sort of price to aim for.

thanks a lot guys.

I paid £30 for a middle pipe, supplied and fitted on my first car.

If you can find somewhere as cheap as that near you, a whole standard system will probably cost £70.

Otherwise, a normal place will charge around £50 for a backbox, fitted IMO.

looks like it will be a new backbox am afraid it will be extremly loud and defening untill you get it sorted should be relative cheap sinces its a fiesta and they are rather common a scrap yard should have some. when i snapped my backbox off it set me back £100 quid for the standard unit due to the rariety of my car.
