background fading

is it possible to make the background fade into another colour (white in my case) in html or something?

I assume you mean a kind of gradient of some sort. In html no.

Easiest thing would be to make a long thin image of the fade using photoshop or whatever. Then use css to make this a background which repeats in the x direction, making a nice smooth fade.
