Is there any way of getting rid of the background 'hiss' I can hear when I have my headphones hooked up to my pc, when nothing is playing? It's not so much this hiss like you can get if it's just because the volume is up high, it's more of an electronic hiss...

Thanks in advance :)

One thing you could try is in the audio panel thingy, mute all the inputs that aren't used, like mic, line-in etc. Apart from master, wave and midi volume I have all the other settings, inputs and outputs, on zero and muted.

If that doesn't help it's probably just noise from the soundcard. Could move it to a PCI slot further away from other components. What headphones and soundcard is it btw?

Thanks for the quick reply, I'll try muting other channels :)

I'm actually just using the onboard sound (DFI nF4 Karajan thingy) :o , with a pair of Alessandro MS-1 phones.

When using something like win media, be sure to set the volume in that to full/near full and adjust the master level. If you have the master on full and lower the media player volume to give the right level, it causes more hissing :)

When you say electronic hiss can you hear tones/bus noise?

Hmm, what do you mean by bus noise? It's not tonal, and it's not a continuous 'hisssssss', I don't know how to describe it exactly, it's juddery or stuttering hiss, very fast, and it's always the same volume however loud I set the volume, even if I mute the master :S I just thought it was maybe just the interference along the cable and connections and wondered if I could sort it out, I'm sure my last pc didn't have such a noticeable noise...

Bus noise is when u can hear noise which is generated by your system, the tone of the noise is norm high pitched and cycling.. the tone can even be changed by opening or closing a folder.

So u only hear this noise when there is silence?

Hmm... it may well be that actually... added to the fact these headphones are quite sensitive I think! The noise kinda skipped when I clicked 'Quote' to reply to your post, I repeated it over and over to check it wasn't just me and it does skip slightly, weird... And I suppose it is a medium-high ish pitch noise, and cycling. I hear this 'noise' as soon as the headphones are plugged in, regardless of whether the volume is muted or not, and I don't know if it's only around when there is silence, I can't hear it when I have music playing over it :) :p

Thanks for the replies by the way :)

Could get an external DAC, assuming someone does one with a headphone output, and use digital out if the mobo has it. Or I'm sure a dedicated soundcard would improve things.
