As title says

I'm using photoshop cs5, for this particular job i've been opening jpg's (a blank room) then overlaying some png's of wall art.

I've been doing this for a few weeks with no problems. Now all of a sudden whenever i open up a jpg within photoshop, the background layer is locked. I can get around this by renaming the layer or duplicating it, but this really is a pain.

Does anyone know what may of happened and how maybe i can restore this?

I think that's normal behaviour as it does it for me too. Just double click the background layer in the layers panel and you can quickly convert it to a normal layer.

Seems to be my response elsewhere, i'm just baffled how i have been doing this for months and only now it's happening.

Always has been for me. If I want to unlock it I just drag it onto the new layer button and off I go. Delete the original.

As I mentioned above, you can just double click on the background layer and it will convert it to a new layer. Is quicker and will save you from having to delete the original.
