been having a good old play with a kestrel and am ready to buy my own. To be fair, rotaries are dead easy to use I think.

Anyway, something confusing me and I cant be bothered to join DW for one question.

I want the 3M backing plate which seems to be 125mm and I also want the 3M pads which only seem to come in 150mm.

Is this right? Surely there's some overhang of the backing plate?

sounds right, the pads are like this..

stops damage from striking the surface with the edge.

This thread had me proper confused for a minute, the thread title had me thinking of brakes, then the mention of rotaries had me on w@nkels, then I read "DW" as "driftworks". Was halfway through the post before I knew you were on about polishing :p

I don't really keep up with this sort of stuff but on my porter cable the pads are a larger diameter than the backing plate so it seems about right to me.

yip, ta. All turned up now. 3M pads seem to be amongst the best in the industry especially with their respective backing plates which have a nice flex in them (again, detailers seem to repsect them), with a Kestrel rotary.

Pics will follow soon but before I touch the 5 I'm going to practice again on my GFs car :)
