Hi,

I'm after a way to back up the entire of my Mac, I just bought a WD MyBook Pro as I needed an external disk and it came with retrospect.
Is retrospect any good? Easy to restore if the entire HD were to die for example?

Things I <need> backing up - iCal, couple of certain folders and Address Book.

Is there a better free alternative?

I currently have a cron job - but just noticed it doesn't wake the mac from hibernate :(

You can download the latest copy of "Backup" which is Apple's own backup utility.

It's pretty good, but I'm not sure if it's totally free.. I know you get it free if you have a .mac account :)

I've just got an external USB drive and here's what i've done. I have a MacBook with a 60gb HDD, so i've partitioned the USB drive in two, one 60gb and then the second the rest of the space. That 60gb part is a direct copy of my MB made with SuperDuper, and will be updated weekly. The second part is just for my Aperture library and other files, and i'll also keep non updated images of the MB on there :)

SuperDuper appears to be one of the more well known and used applications for backing up Mac's, and it's what i'm going for.

To test this i booted my MB from the USB drive, and there were no problems at all :)

Alas "backup" is a part of .mac. Which means you'll have to pay around 70quid a year to use it! You get a load of other things too, but .mac is generally considered to be a rip off and I agree. This is one issue that really gets me miffed with Apple, they provide a host of excellent applications (iphoto etc) and tout the "works straight out of the box" line. Yet they don't include a backup program!
