Backing up a Windows installation

Hi there everyone. I had a relation experience some serious problems with his laptop. I have reinstalled Windows for him, found the appropriate drivers, install numerous updates and so on. Now, said relatives IT literacy leads me to believe there is a significant probability I will be seeing the laptop again at some point in for foreseeable future.

What I would really like to do is find some means of backing up the installation onto a DVD disk or otherwise, and in turn an easy means of putting the fresh installation back onto the laptop if and when required. Any ideas?

Same here, Acronis 11 for this.

I've used it for a number of years and it's great to create a backup of your installation, and then if you carry out incrematal back ups on a regular basis you can go back to virtaully any point in time.

acronis true image

you can store the image on a dvdrw disc or hard drive, use acronis to make a bootable disc

then put that bootable disc into his system, (and an external drive, or have dvdrw's handy) then write the image to disc

turn off system restore and run ccleaner on the system first, to get rid of any temp files on the system to get a smaller 'image' size
