Hi all, wonedr if you can help. I recently joined a hack server on random allocation and before I could do anything it had overwritten my profile and gave me ever challenge and emblem. Really annoyed as I'd been playing for 11 months since it came out and had acheived 90% of everything ligitimately. I hadn't entered Prestige but I have now as I can't get the original settings back from the .BAK file as that had also been overwritten. However, I don't want the same to happen again and get thrown to Prestige 10 without earning it. Therefore, can anyone advise on any tried and tested software for backing up and restoring profiles for this particular situation? I'm running Win 7 x64.

Thanks in advance :)

Sorry to hear that pal, it really sucks. The people who do this stuff are just idiotic.

There's a similar hack that takes away many of your unlocks and stats too. Only thing to stop it is (when you know you're in a hacked server) to unplug your internet or turn off your PC before the game ends. If you exit the game as normal it is all saved...

If that happens to me I'm rage quiting!

Believe me guys I was spitting feathers at the time and registered on IW forum and made my views very clear about the poor security around the game. I thought it was a professional rant! However, they decided to ignore my complaint and proceeded to give me a life ban! How obtuce.

I just hope Black Ops works better for the PC gaming community.

Atleast im not the only one, was proper annoyed when this happened, i enjoyed unlocking things, testing them as i got them. Only bought the game recently, actually quite enjoying it but things like this are a downer.

When it happened the first time i googled deleting the profile, there is a bunch of folders in the Steam folder with numbers for a name (i.e. 34829) These house your profile (they are not distinguishable, and may affect other games). I removed them and it kicked me back down to level 1, in hindsight i should have backed them up before i played as it happened again).

I'll try and find the process

Edit: Found googling, not the same method i used but seems ok

"21. Vista / Windows 7: How to get multiplayer rank back after crash ?

If your running Windows Vista or Windows 7 and have not backed up your players directory you may still be able to recover it.

1. Browse to -- C:|Program Files|Steam|steamapps|common|call of duty modern warfare 2 or for 64bit Windows -- C:|Program Files (x86)Steam|steamapps|common|call of duty modern warfare 2
2. Right Click on the "players" directory and click properties.
3. Click the "Previous Versions" tab
4. If you have previous versions listed then your in luck.
5. Copy the "players" folder to "Players - Old" so that you have a backup.
6. Delete the contents of the existing "players" folder and copy the files from previous version back in to the dir.
7. Restart MW2.

22. Technical support says about Back-Up :

1. Go to the Steam folder and find the Modern Warfare 2 install folder
2. Default location: C: |Program Files | Steam | Steamapps | common | call of duty modern warfare 2 |
3. Open the | players | folder
4. The multiplayer profile is updated regularly as a. Stat file and also includes a backup file.
5. All original profile files begin with md202ef8d and backup files will begin with md202ef8d.bak
6. Locate the profile and backup. Stat files with the most recent "Date Modified" listed in Windows
7. Move the profile. Stat file to a new location (Creating a new folder and placing it here should be fine)
8. Rename the backup. Stat file and remove the ". Bak" from the filename
9. Launch Steam and re-test this game.

I did try removing the profiles in the SteamApps directory completely (saved them to a temp folder) and restarted the game, exactly the same so I recon the hack completed srewed my settings permanently. Even now when I go into Prestige all the challenges are reset but I have all the Veteran challenges complete. VAC and PunkBuster don't even detect the fact that I have all challenges all of a sudden....

Update: Cheers, I did try the above from the google search as well and it didn't work. My own fault really as I new from COD4 and COD5 that it also happened and I used a copy program with those games. Just didn't think it was possible on MW2 as the servers were random allocations.

There is definatly a different method that works as i've done it myself, i just can't remember the steps.

Go through your Steam directory looking for some folders with just numbers and try those?

My googling is telling me it can't be done because of steam cloud, but i know i have. Odd

*edit* I believe the folders are in \Steam\userdata\(number)

Your profile is synced with steam cloud so I dont think it can be removed as it will just re-sync again. Only way I know of to stop it is to quit the game before steam syncs (task manger, end process or power off machine before u leave steam). which is obviously no use to you now..

Thanks guys. I'll have a further look around the World Wide Wait and see if I can find a decent peice of software that can do this backup and restore from a single icon click.

And to all you hackers out there.......hope your nads shrivell and drop off (comment based on 100% hackers being male) :p

Hmm, trying to play MW2 MP this morning and get this message:

Your local CODMW2 files are not the same as the ones stored on Steam Cloud.

Cloud Files modified yesterday.
Local files modified today.

Either download from SCloud to your PC or upload your local files to SCloud.

Never seen this before...is it something to do with a hack or just normal stuff? I haven't played MW2 today at all, only a quick game on Bioshock. Any advice?
