Hi all, im about to perform a complete reinstall of a win 98 system, i have no backup driver disks and the copy of windows has been on the computer since about 1798! I want to know how best to back the drivers up (USB stick) in order that once i have reinstalled windows i can simply reapply them.

Should i do a "*.dll" search? will that give me all the files i need?

Just use Device Manager to compile a list of the hardware in the PC. Then download the current or last drivers for each bit of hardware and save them to the USB stick.

Be very, very careful about sticking that Win98 system onto the internet without any type of firewall or protection after reinstalling.

If you can, get the drivers off websites first, if you cant once you have re-installed Win98, I would try and use another PC to get the drivers. this way no spyware etc can get onto the fresh install of 98.

found an interesting tool "driver magician" locates all non-windows drivers, collects copies and backs them up to a location of your choice, can even beck them up as an auto executable so that you dont need the program to restore them. Seems a good idea, not tested yet tho.
