Hi,

I want to backup my dvds onto my macbook. Which programs should i be using? I am thinking of setting up a little media centre with all my films on so what would be the best format for me to encode them in?

Thanks for the help.

Matt

ok this poses my next question... handbrake stops encoding them after about 0.85% I've tried it on a couple of dvds now and it does the same thing, i get about 45 seconds of film!!

Any ideas?

edit: ignore that i seem to have got it working now (when i selected the h.264 main setting). Is this the best option for me then? I left everything else as default i.e. picture size, audio etc. I dont want to spend days ripping my dvd collection only to find out its a cack format!

well im using the Apple TV preset in handbrake. I dont mind about the time it takes for the encoding because its hopefully going to be a one time thing, I can then just encode dvds as I purchase them which wont be so much of an effort.

I haven't selected de-interlacing for the current dvd encoding, is it worth doing it again?

bit of a cheeky bump disguised as a question...

Anyone know of any windows programs for encoding in h.264? Or any tutorials at least. It seems silly having my windows machine sat idle while my mac does all the work.

Also I left an encoding running over night and when i checked the mp4 file this morning the sound was screwed! It started fine but after about 5 mins it cut out. No sound for the rest of the movie. I did notice that this film was only going at 7fps so maybe there is a problem with the disc. It's just a pain because it took 4 hours and i dont know whether i should risk re-encoding it?

I have updated the sticky to include a load of essential apps.. take a look and try something else if you're having problems with handbrake :)

Thanks, i stumbled across the handbrake forums and apparently no sound is a common problem which can be solved by using mactheripper before hand.

I think im going to change my strategy and just use MTR to rip a few dvds then set handbrake to encode overnight.
