backing up firefox bookmarks from old install?

Something happened to my "wonderful vista" installation last night making me unable to use the computer.

I have had to install again on the same hdd and leave the old install there so I could back up files.

I had a lot of bookmarks saved within firefox and I am wondering how I can rescue these from the old windows.old directory?

C:\Users\****\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\06n0rjq4.default

You want the 'bookmarks.html' file. What I've stared out is your Windows user-name. Also the .default folder might have a different name on your PC

Best thing would be to copy the entire Mozilla folder & even better is the whole 'Users' directory in case there's any other program which might have your files, etc e.g. e-mail program such as Thunderbird.

I also suggest using XMarks (new version of Foxmarks) to backup your bookmarks/sync them between different machines in future

What you really want (if you're using Firefox >=3) is places.sqlite. bookmarks.html is generated periodically at best.

Best thing would be to copy the entire Mozilla folder & even better is the whole 'Users' directory in case there's any other program which might have your files, etc e.g. e-mail program such as Thunderbird.

Maybe the Mozilla folder (though losing some of the cruft that builds up doesn't do any harm), taking the entire Users directory would just be insane.

Are these files "hidden" on Windows? Just wondering if a simple Roboscript batch file would be a good way to automatically back these files up on a weekly basis?

Not as far as I know, though IIRC AppData is.

Cheers tolien. I don't use Firefox that much, being an Opera-ist nowadays. :cool:

But I wouldn't mind setting up Opera/Firefox scripts to back bookmarks and other files up automatically. You'll know this, and it'll save me some time later, so can I ask what page I need to find on the Mozilla site to find the locations of essential config files for Firefox?

I just copy everything in my profile folder so I don't need to reinstall plugins or themes either.
