Backing up Outlook Before Format

I use Outlook just for hotmail and Google mail. Am I right in thinking it's pointless backing up the .pst files? The only thing that I reckon I need to back up is the contacts as I sync them to my iPhone.

the .pst file is the emails stored on outlook

The .PST files are your emails effectively, how is it Outlook set up? POP3? IMAP?

Depends on whether you want to keep the emails and whether you've set outlook to leave a copy on the mail servers i.e. synchronise or download
