Backing up photos to Google - Best way to do these days on PC

Many years ago I used a dedicated Google app which automatically uploaded the photos folder on my PC to google. I think it resized them so as not to use any of my storage limit up.

It was nice to know all my images were there in yet another online backup.

Then that app was replaced by a new version, and it had problems, such that on every bootup, loads of processing effort was being put into resyncing the images, such that in the end, I uninstalled it.

Is there now a good means to simply upload all my photos to google, trouble free?

Ah, seems they did away with their free storage for photos, so given we have 250GB of photos, I think we'll give Google Backup a miss for photos etc...

Amazon do an unlimited photo storage at full resolution thingmy, if you are a Prime member, so technically not free, but may be worth it if you use all the other things Prime offers. Amazon are currently pestering me with a £10 gift code to set it up, but I haven't bothered yet as I don't have that many photos to store to bother taking them off Google. Though I agree with you about the CPU time used to check the sync of all your files every time you reboot with Google, that is annoying. You can get around this by using the dedicated Google Photos app instead of syncing with the other Google folder sync method, that didn't seem to want to check all my photos every time I logged on when I tried it. BUT, I found doing it that way the Photos app wouldn't automatically replace photos if I ever cropped them, or did anything else to edit them, even if saving as the same filename on my PC, it just uploaded a duplicate copy of the photo, so you end up using more space in your allowance. I went back to syncing folders because of this and put up with the syncing. Time will tell if the Amazon photo upload truly remains unlimited of course, but may be more chance of that compared to Google, since you are ultimately paying for it.

Amazon's offering sounds interesting. Does it allow you to view the photos on say your TV through the Amazon Video app? Because I'd love to be able to nicely browse my photos on my TV somehow...

I've not looked into it to that extent, but from what I can gather it is just another google store app, so if your smart TV can install the app you might be able to view photos through that.
