Backing Up Program Files

I need to backup some files because i'm going to format a couple of computers. My question is, if I was to copy the contents of the Program Files folder to a spare hard drive, format the computer, could I then copy the Program Files folder back accross and all the programs work straight away? Or will I have to install the programs again? Thanks

You will still have to re-install as none of the registry settings will be copied across to the new install.

Check out Acronis True Image 10 Home, it allows you to back up all settings for some common programs
