My sons PS3 is going for repair. Is there anyway to backup all the stuff saved on the hard disk? I have no idea what a PS3 saves onto the HDD, save games and the like im guessing.

Anyone know the answer?

If the PS3 is still working you can back it up to an external hard drive using the built in Backup Utility, or you could just manually copy any save games.

If it's going to repair because it won't boot up then there's no way to back up the data.

You'll also only be able to fully restore the above backup to the same PS3, so if you are able to create a backup but get a refurb unit back some data won't be restored.

Do a full backup if possible and then manually copy savegames to USB stick.
If you get a refurb you can still copy back the manual savegames butunfortunately not all savegames can be copied.

Have you tried that and how successful was it?
I'm concerned about having months worth of game saves, that has no backup. Just in case my PS3 suffers from YLOD.

I never did a full backup as I have 200GB of videos on the PS3 and only a 160GB external drive, I do however manually backup my savegames every week (apart from the locked ones)

You can always remove the HDD, put it in an enclosure and backup the data like you would with any other HDD. If memory serves, it won't void your warranty but when you replace the HDD with another HDD (i.e. when you're upgrading) then HDD won't be covered by Sony's warranty. I don't know whether the same goes for removing and reinstalling the same HDD.

No you can't, the disk format isn't recognised by Windows and connecting the HDD to anything other than the console it belongs to will usually result in the PS3 rejecting it afterwards.

This is wrong. I backed up my original 60GB onto an external HHD then restored it onto my 320GB slim.

+1

What you can't do is pull the hard drive from your faulty machine and put it into a new one, the new PS3 won't work until it's formatted it.

You can copy (non-protected) saves to a USB if the PS3 still boots up - just go to Games, find the Save Games section - highlight each save, press triangle and press Copy. A backup will copy all games and game data as well as saves, but they can all be re-downloaded from the PS Store for free, or re-installed off the game disc.

Do you know if there's trick that allows you to back up the savegame files to a USB stick in one go, or am I going to have to manually copy each individual file across to the stick? Even something that would allow you to copy a game's save folder across in one go would be handy.
