Backing up SMS and Emails?

A friend of mine has asked if I can backup their messages and emails so ideally I just want to forward it all to a gmail account, which is how I'd do it on an Android but having never done it on IOS before I can't see an easy way of doing this as any apps I've been able to find on the App Store are poorly rated.

The default mail app supports gmail, so that's email covered. For messages, I think they will have to back up using iTunes (or iCloud?).

Sorry regarding the email, I meant that they have a load of emails on the phone already and I want to basically backup/forward them to another account, such as Gmail.

You can set up the old account as a POP account within gmail, so it'll pull down all the mail: http://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-migrate-to-gmail/. Plus, from then on, all mail sent to the old account will also appear in gmail which is useful.

Hopefully they didn't set the mail app on their iPhone to download & delete messages from the server. You may want to log in to the old account online first and check.

Thank you Craig321. It's really helpful. I didn't know about that before.
