backing up to usb hdd

I have one of these maxtor onetouch hdd's, but the maxtor software sucks eggs.

Anyone know of any decent (free or otherwise) software that can reside on the hdd itself, so I can syncronise to multiple pc's, without needing to install stuff on those particular pc's.

Basically, i work at home and work, and need to keep everything sync'd up.

Microsoft SyncToy is good, though it needs to be installed. You could install it to the hard drive and run it from there on any PC though.

It's the same with Western Digital Hardrives - their software sucks ass too....

Are there any more alternatives to MS' synctoy?

SyncToy is small and easy and does just the job though.

Is there any programs apart from the Maxtor's normal program that will make use of the button on the actual HDD, as this would be useful for the rest of the family so they don't have to understand the backup software?
