Well I have no idea how long a tft is supposed to last for, but my trusty Hyundai q17 has just started having backlight issues. Started off with a flicker, now it just cuts out a few seconds after refreshing (either on/off or switching modes)

Only reason I can see this is because I have a second q17 which is still sort of going strong (can see the lines between pixels on some colours)

Am I fortunate to have a tft last more than 4 years? Especially considering some days it's on for longer than 10 hours. Is there a way to fix the backlight? I'd rather not get a new screen(s) right now.
 
well it will be one of two things, its either the CCFL tube, (like a mini strip light) or its the inverter board that powers it. usually its the inverter board. can you hear any hissing of fizzing if you put your ear to it ??

the parts i mentioned should not be expensive and fairly obtainable, fitting them however can be a nightmare and usually best handed to a proffesional which can cost more than the screen is worth.

Exact same thing happened to my friend. Turned out the backlight plug was loose/disconnected. But this was a Laptop... so yeah I thought I'd put that in anyway. Hope you get it sorted soon Bud.
 
trying to find a free online manual was proving difficult, it's just taken me an hour to get the front bezel off. I hate clip on plastic.

The screen has 4 CCFL's lookint at it so far whilst still surrounded so it looks like the inverter has gone. Need more dissassemble before I can find any details. Having a quick search apparently it could be something on the board which has blown and could be replaced, a weak solder point. Might be repairable, if not I'm going to search ebay for a cheap OHP.

got access to the back of the panel, found the inverter, camera is useless at closeup

Hunting the internet half the day looking for fixes, I have some pics.

this is the existing inverter, the metal screw holes aren't needed.

this one I found on auction for a tenner, all looks ok apart from the connector, I can't tell if it is 5 or 6 pins, my current one uses 6 cables

found this one on another site, costs £25, has 6 pins but I can't really justify paying 25 when I could get a new screen for £75

can I buy the one from auction and modify my connector to work on it?
 
Was definitely the inverter which went, just dismantled my other monitor to steal the inverter from and it works fine. It's funny that they are two identical screen made a couple of weeks apart but they have different panels (both samsung with the same serial code, just look different) and the inverter boards were slightly different. All I need to do now is find a 6pin to 6pin cable and it's all good when the new inverter arrives. The place that rhymes with happenin' didn't have anything which would do it.
 
I've already spent 10 hours taking apart and sorting out these screens, mind you I was infront of the tv whilst doing it. Might have been cheaper to buy new instead of taking that time. Was quite interesting reassembling them as there were two sets of parts on the floor, I'm sure they're mixed up now.
 
well sods law has to kick in every so often...

after breaking the cable, rearranging some other stuff, the connector was to small for me to solder with as I have no experience. The other screen was working fine so last night I won a second so I could repair this one when I have more time.

Now my other screen has broken. Manufactured 3 weeks apart, they have now died 3 weeks apart, and I have a 3rd on the way which I don't know what the date is.

I've blown 2 inverters, have one I can't use due to needing to solder the cable, missing another cable and I have another screen coming "sometime" this week. Urgh should have just bought 2 new ones. Really annoyed now.
 
Do these monitors have a timed self destruct mode on them or something my Hyundai Q17 has just started exhibiting the exact same symptoms as your 2 monitors!

You switch it on and it shows for about 1/2 a second then goes black you can see it really feintly in the background. If I switch between DVI/VGA it'll come back on for 1/2 then off again.

I take it mine's crackered as well then :( Had it since my 21st birthday Oct 03 so lasted almost 4 1/2 years.
 
that's exactly what happened to mine, and the same manufacturing date!

I'm not sure if it's the panel control board that killed off the inverter, or if the inverter's just last 4.5 years, swapping the inverter worked for 2 weeks but now this ones died with the same panel.

i'm tempted to take the lcd displays apart and run them with a diffused desklamp behind them, i can't afford to be paying out 41eur for a new inverter (82eur as i have two screens)

I have to admit, Hyundai support are being very helpful, next day support, willing to discuss and seem easy to talk with. Hoping to have all this resolved in the next couple of weeks (got a lot on my plate at the moment)
