Ok. Now the new year is nearly upon us I am wanting to change what I do in my life. As I now am single (still living with ex but will be selling up in the new year and going our sperate ways) I am wanting to do something different and help others out.

I am looking into a few options;

1. Leaving for Mexico. Maybe for a year. Im not sure yet. I have been looking into the pro's and con's of doing this but still requires more indepth study

2. Back packing across the globe. This I have no idea on. Well I know a few things about it as I have some freinds who have done this. I would like to know more.

Has anyone here done any of this? I am looking into finding out how much money I may need to fund such a massive task, where to start and what route is best to take.

I would like to help out doing charity work, as this would make the whole experience a lot better imo, more than likely in the so called 3rd world countries.

If anyone here can point me in the right direction and offer some tips on money or what to do I would be most gratefull. I will be making the effort to start saving after xmas has passed and I know once I hand in my notice at work I should have around £3000 to put towards the funding.

I am not rushing into this adventure but making sure I get as much information as possible to ponder over before hand. I would be taking someone with me, a good freind.

Over to you.
:)

Thanks for the replies people. I will have alook at that gapyear site later. Im at work from 11 till 10 today so wont have much time to reply on here.

I know we can do it on a really tight budget or spend a lot on flights etc. I would prefer to do the budget version. Visiting africa, Asia and the Americas.

I will have a word later with my friend and see what is said.

Cheers.

Mexico is an amazing place, but in my opinion, not amazing enough to do a whole year there.

..

I have been to Mexico before. Only for a 10 day holiday and that was on the Carribean side of it. I would love to go across the whole of Mexico and maybe work there. I know they dont get paid lots but with enough money behind me Im sure I can live comfy for 12 months over there.

Bar work, or even Voluntary work in the developing areas is what I would do.

Like I said in my OP. I have looked into this already but need more in depth info before even going ahead with it.

I was looking at the Gapyear site (very good) they have lots of information on there.

I would probably go for UK-Sweden/Denmark-Russia-China-India-Indoneisia-OZ-NZ-Arg-Chili-Bolivia-Peru-Ven-Mexico-US-Canada and finish off Somewhere hot for a month for a holiday.

This is my ideal route anyway.
