I have a Sapphire 7950 non-OC edition + EK-7950 waterblock. Forgot to order the back plate though

is it necessary?

Purely cosmetic.

Hi, maybe but my EK GPU Backplate V2 6970 actually helps the cooling as l had to place a thermal pad strip on it prior to installing it. Some one with the EK 7950 Backplate might confirm if this is the same as my 6970 backplate helps with cooling.:)

I had no idea of that, as they are non-standard to come with blocks I presumed it was just for looks.

Learning something new every day :)

Can confirm on my 7970 backplate. It does heat up. I have no window on the side of my case so I bought purely on heat dissipation + support for PCB to prevent bending...

It does help with temps, but not by a margin that makes it worth the price.

Main features are aesthetics and keeping the card from Sagging

when my 7950 backplate arrives it will indeed be in aid of the sagging, these full cover blocks are heavy :)

backplates are only required for cards with memory on the back.

my 590 has a backplate because the stock backplates are horrible and the memory on the back of the card actually needs cooling.

most single GPU cards without memory on the rear of the card dont need the backplate.

but it looks pretty good.

shame EK dont do a nickel backplate anymore.
