Backup Encryption

Guys,

I need to start encrypting tape backups.

At present I have a Quantum Superloader 3 with an LTO-4 inbuilt drive using Backup Exec 12.5. We are using LTO-3 media at the moment due to purchasing the media prior to buying the LTO4 device.

I’ve tried using hardware encryption in Backup Exec but the job queues and does not run. (possibly not supported on LTO3 media?) I’ve tried software encryption but the overhead is approx 40% and this is not ideal.

Can anyone confirm if this is the case? Do we need LTO4 media to support hardware encryption?

How does everyone else protect their tape media?

Thanks

brave.... soooooo brave......

each day when you run a backup, wave at your data... give it a leaving present... because it could well be the last time you see it...

I'll add something slightly useful..... but you found the encryption option already... maybe buy a faster backup server? probably no more expensive than replacing the tape drive and all the tapes..

;) Better than to wave at your data as a competitor runs off with it!!

To be honest it should have been done much sooner, but the tape rotation has grown and was previously quite a stringent rotation.

I can possibly upgrade the server (it's a 380 g4, 4gb) - but I think I am going to do a bit more testing with software compression followed by encryption. I accidentally had software encryption followed by hardware compression which could have been causing issues.

Would be good to know if hardware encryption is not supported with LTO3 media though?
