Hi All,

We're currently using Backup Exec 11d, and we're trying to set up a new Backup to Disk job from a folder on a nightly basis, so from Monday night through to Friday Night. The job is approximately 200GB in size and takes about 3 hrs ish to run

I've set up the Backup to Disk folder with the following settings:
Max size for B2D files: 210GB
Max number of backup sets per B2D file: 100
Number of concurrent jobs for thie B2D Folder: 1

I've then set a media set as follows:
Overwrite protection period: 0 hrs
Append period: Infinite - Allow Append

The job is set up to use the correct device, in this case called 'Notts Backups' and is set to use the 'Notts Backups' Media set

The job is set up Append to Media, overwrite if no appendable media is available.

The disk they are writing to has 1.5TB of space, so should be enough to keep at least a weeks worth of backups, but when I'm looking in the folder at the *.bkf files they seem to be overwriting the files.

The issue:

I've obviously got a setting wrong here, as I want it to fill up the disk with each of the nightly backups, and then when the disk is full to overwrite the oldest of these files. Is anyone able to advise me which setting I've got wrong here, cause its confusing the hell out of me!

Thanks in advance!

WIth Overwite protection at 0 it will just overwrite existing files, you would need to set that at say 5 days, which would leave 5 days backups there before overwriting again.

Is the backup job less than 105GB?

If so it's not overwriting the file, it's appending another backup to the same .bkf If you try and restore from that media it should still show the first job aswell as the second.

I think you need to change your Media Set's Overwite Protection to 1 week (or however many days you want to retain backups for) and set the Append Period to "None - Don't Allow Append".

In the job itself, I would set it to "Overwrite media". This means the job is not allowed to append data to the current disk file (if it is less than x days since it was last written to) and is forced to create a new one instead.

These settings work for me so should hopefully work for you as well.

korbk could you try and screenshot your settings for me please, as I've just tried that now, and it is now prompting me to tell me that its overwriting one of the files - the one thing I dont want it to do. I currently have 2 files from 1 backup job: B2D001582 & B2D001581

I've attached some screenies below

Check Tools->Options>Settings->Media Management and ensure your protection level is NOT set to "None".

Also, check the properties of your Media Set, I have my Overwrite Protections period set to "1 Weeks" and the Append Period set to "0 Hours" - effectively, None.

Sorry not sure how to include screen shots in my post, but your settings look the same as mine, except you haven't included the Media Set's properties so I can't compare them to mine.

Hope this helps.
