We have connected an old tape drive and ive built a server with 2003 on. I have setup backup exec and its found the HP backup drive and all the information on the tape.

Is there any way to get the information from the tape to computer hard drive without joining our existing domain and using old usernames, passwords etc.

Seems stupid i can see the data on the tape but cannot get it off without going through a load of trouble. I dont even think we have the old username/passwords used to backup

Thanks

At the moment its setup and in backup exec with the defaults, the drive is detected and it has a tape in there. I can restore data but get the message 'Restore 0026 -- The job failed with the following error: Unable to attach to one of the drives.' when trying to do a mailbox restore

In tools > options > job defaults > exchange all the stuff is greyed out, same for SQL

Have you got the Exchange and SQL licences?

Yes. I am trying to restore a mailbox but do not really want it connected to our current exchange server. Is this possible? I think i also need to run the logon account wizard but am unsure what the password was from when it was originally setup

From my version 11d you have to restore exchange to exchange - You can redirect to a new temp server but it has to have exchange installed on there.

You will need the local Admin account yes.

Im using version 9.1 on testserver. Just found this...

Requirements for Using the Exchange Agent with Exchange 2000 and 2003
The following are required for the Exchange Agent in Exchange 2000 and Exchange Server 2002 installations:

The media server must have access to the Exchange Server.
To use Backup Exec's Resource Discovery feature, which allows detection of new backup resources within a Windows domain, you must install Microsoft's Exchange System Manager utility on the media server. The media server must be running Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003.

Looks like 9.1 also needs access to exchange server. I wonder if you can just setup a dummy exchange server instead of using a real one. Settings may have to be how they were when it was originally backed up though?

When i go to restore from resourse i can only see data from the fileserver, SQL C: and under the Exchange server just 'Microsoft information store\First storage group' and 'Shadow copy components'

Inside the first storage group there is just mailbox store and public folder store...

So it other words, doesnt look like we do. Look like im going to need to connect it to exchange, somehow get the username and password from when it was originally backed up and restore it to an existing store. sorry.

What would my first steps be in hooking it up to exchange. do i need to install exchange system manager on the test server? if so then what are my first steps?
