How Do :)

just got a shiny new laptop and it's took ages to get to just how i want it and i would like to (in the simplest way possible) create a 1:1 image of how it all is so i can restore back to this exact state later on...

am i right in thinking Norton Ghost is the way to go? i had a play on a different computer and didn't really understand what was going on... any tips?

Cheers :)

use acronis true image, far better than ghost imo

do you have msn, want to discuss something regarding integra :)

with personal experience with both pieces of software, i would pick acronis over ghost time after time. I have had numerous problems with ghost in the past, such as not saving MBR properly etc

hey guys if using image backup software such as those listed above.. do you have to install the software on a fresh windows install and then start using it or can u install at any time?

Is the acronis true image 10 home edition the most suitable package?

Cheers

I've got True Image 9 which I use for data backups but never used for imaging.

Which optin should I use for that? It seemed a bit unclear when I tried.

the way i use it is install it on a pc that i'm not going to use it on, then in that, select "create bootable cd"

this makes a cd with acronis on it, that lets you do backups on your pc and can create a bootable partition that has *** backup on it -has a press F11 to enter acronis, just before entering windows

you can create the backup anytime after installing windows

could i just check...

i have acronis now, and it seems that i create a 1:1 image of a partition that i can later restore to... however, my c drive in its present state (that i want to take a snapshot of) is only 6 gig worth, but it wants to make an image of the whole 40 gig caboodle - any way to only make a 100% accurate 6 gig image of the entire windows setup+apps/drivers etc?

secondly, (bledd), you said it creates a bootable partition but when i just had a play it just makes a backup image in a specified folder, doesn't take over a partition or nuthin... could you clarify whay is the best way to do this?

mucho thanks, and thats for recommending a great app :)

Been using Norton Ghost 9.0 for a year and no problems at all.

It just creates a data file the size of your data (minus stuff like swap file etc) which I store on a partition. then when I need to restore I just boot using the GHOST disk, point the software to the backup file and away it goes.

heard True-Image is good also just didn't bother to try it yet as GHOST works well for me :)

whatever the size of your image is.. say its 4gb compressed, in acronis use the 'manage acronis secure zone' tool, and make the secure zone about 5gb (to be safe)

then create a new backup, and for location, choose the secure zone, it'll sort it out for you

probably a good idea to clear out all temp files using something like ccleaner (set it to remove hotfix backups too in advanced options) -to make the smallest size possible, if you dont mind it taking a bit longer, use max compression and for what its worth, i'd do a verify image too.. (you'd be real ****** if it didn't work after all!)

you can restore that image that you saved to file to any sized hard drive, it just remembers the original drives' size

i've had a real good play with this tool over the last two weeks, yet to make it fall over! worked fine with vista/xp/64bit, with multiple hard drives and can clone from ide to sata, and sata to ide with no booting problems at all

-edit, Big Wayne, i used to use ghost 9 a lot in work, if i'd known how good acronis is, i'd have ditched ghost ages ago!

oh ok mate, sweet...

one last quesiton then... if you can make these images from within windows (and store them in the secure zone), and then you can press F11 to access the dialog that allows you to restore the image, then why would you need to create the boot disk you mentioned above?

you dont need the software installed on the pc (saving a few mbs off the image size), my image for windows only + drivers (nlited) was 174mb

i just feel more comfortable making an image of a system that is not currently in use, but thats just me

i'm yet to play with the scheduled incremental backups, thats next on the list when i've got a few hours to kill
