Backup open/locked files from a network drive?

I have searched the web the answer seems to be no. But thought I would ask this question anyway is it possible to backup open/locked files from a network drive?
The reason I ask is I work from files shared on a network drive at the end of each day the files are backed up on to a usb hard drive then taken home but the backup fails when trying to backup open files.
