I urgently need advice on backing up 400gb across lan, I need some software that can compress the backup and send it to the nas on a daily bases. What is the best way to do this?

Does all 400GB change daily, or could you perform a one-time full backup, and then daily perform an incremental backup?

Well its a quick fix really, our primary backup server is dying (and tape drive has failed) which contain our backup excel 2012 which used tapes, I need a temporary solution to compress and transfer a one time 400gb backup of all the sql dbs, private files, settings etc to a 4 tb nas drive over our network.

After that I can then reformat our the server and fix the issues, I just need to make sure we have a full backup (just incase our storage raid fails which is also attached to the dying server.) Sorry if this is confusing, I'm rather sleep deprived atm and can't get my word out :P

Over a gigabit LAN running at ~75 MB/sec it shouldn't take *too* long to transfer that amount...

Thats what I'm starting to realise :/

I cannot imagine you have 400gb of data that changes each day..

use robocopy or xcopy /d

You don't think a large manufacturing company has 400gb of data that changes each day? We backup an extra 2tb each night through other means, those servers are working fine though.
