Backup Power Unit Question

Hi,

So I have the following PSU:

Corsair Enthusiast TX850M 850W

And I was wondering if it would be okay to run the following backup power unit:

http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=BR900GI

My initial thoughts are that the PSU is too powerful and the backup power unit wouldn't support it. Is that correct? If so then these things are seriously expensive! This APC model is £200+... There is an 865W version too, but that's over £300.

Any assistance is appreciated :)

Thank you

The PSU will only draw whats needed, what is the system spec being used.

Here's the system spec:

Also have my router that needs to be on backup, but I'm guessing the power consumption on that is minimum

Look at the chart half way down the page you linked. If you maxed out your 850 W PSU it would pull 1060 W at the wall (assuming 80% efficient) which is way above the 540 W that unit can supply, so clearly you won't be gaming off it (in any case, at 540 W you only have 5 mins before it runs out of juice!).

But then these units are basically designed to give you time to shut down your machine and avoid data corruption, and as your PC probably only uses 100-200 W most of the time this UPS would give you at least 20 mins of use (up to an hour even) which should be plenty for that purpose.

Don't forget the batteries need replacing too and are also expensive.

Do you have frequent blackouts or something?

Thank you for the reply and detailed explanation. Based on this I've decided not to bother getting one. I had no idea they only lasted for 10-20 mins... I was thinking at least a couple of hours.

No we don't get regular blackouts, they are rare. Even less reason to bother I suppose

Thanks again
