Since I work in IT, I'm the technical support for my family and extended family. Infact I got 2 PC's to work on over this weekend and I want to make my job easier in the future.
Since they don't keep anything important on the PC's, I generally just wiped the virus infected monstrosity and reinstall windows. Generally the machines don't even boot into windows, so restore points are pretty useless.
I remember using some Norton program years ago that let you boot from a CD then load up a backup image from a external drive. Which is exactually what I need, some program that will let me make backup images of these machines after I've installed windows and the drivers.
