Upto now I've been using ghost 2003 boot floppy to backup my machine to DVD as I don't like anything installed in Windows.
I also use this to create various images of PC's at work, the images are just basic windows SP3 install with all the drivers. We can then add the fresh imaged pc to the domain and run my script to install basic apps.

The problem is that Ghost 2003 faild to detect DVD drives if they are SATA and also has fails with Vista.

What other software are they where you can boot from a floppy/DVD and backup your pc to DVD's or external HDD? The software must work in SATA drives and with Vista. Suggestion please.

yup

acronis true image

just like me, i hate installing extra software..

acronis has a bootable cd that you can use (it's far better than ghost by the way)

to get the cd, you've gotta download the install, install it (i just install it on a temp machine), then from there you select the 'create bootable media' option, and it'll burn acronis true image to a cd for you

$50 (25 quid) http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/

pictures of it.. http://images.google.co.uk/images?hl=en&q=acronis true image&sa=N&tab=fi
