Morning all.

Looking at getting some decent backup software.

Considering Acronis, Clonezilla or Norton Ghost at present.

Which would you recommend?

A cheaper option! How does it compare to things like ghost?

Has anyone had any experience in dealing with a drive restore? Even if the drive is a different size?

SyncbackSE is a file synchronisation utility - it's very good at what it does, and it works well for file-level backups, but it won't restore an entire drive image like Acronis or Norton Ghost.

I'd say Acronis True Image Home is the best of the bunch in terms of useful features and ease of use - Clonezilla is free of course, but from what I've seen it doesn't exactly look user friendly, and you really don't want things to be complicated when you're backing up & restoring drive images...

You can restore an image to a different sized drive from the original with any of these apps AFAIK.

PS. You could also check out Macrium Reflect if you're looking for a cheaper alternative to Acronis. :)

If you have either a Seagate or Maxtor HDD in your system you could use either DiscWizard or MaxBlast which are both the same and is basically Acronis True Image Home 11 with a couple of minor features removed....very good for backup images of your OS.

Syncbackse or Synctoy 2 are very good for folder/file backup...

Another vote for SyncBack.

I used to use an old version of SyncToy but found it left rogue folders on my destination volume, the new version apparently works pretty well.

You've not really indicated what you're going to use it for. My two votes were for back up utilities, not drive image restoration.

Apologies. I'm looking at drive image. Just in the process of a reinstall after a hdd failure and despite having my files backed up it's taking ages to get it to how I want it!

Personally, I use robocopy to backup all of my files. And then I install Acronis once create a bootable CD, then uninstall it!
