hi, i thought i would try server essentials 2012 r2 and like it, but only thing is, I cant find any decent software to backup. in the past (on non servers) I used acronis true image as this allowed me to do backups I could mount and easily look for files etc, but this does not work on server versions of windows. I tried acronis server backup & restore but that didn't seem to do the same thing. so is there anything else I can use?

Windows backup (though I loath it) is imaged based and those can be mounted in windows if you need to pull back the odd file here and there.

The latest versions of Windows Backup don't like backing up to shares, they only keep one copy. If you use an iSCSI target you're fine.

If you're quite poor and want a decent backup solution then look at BackupAssist. If you're not poor and you're running VMs then you should really be making backups at the VM level, at which point Veeam will tick all the boxes.
