Hi,

I have 3 pcs

a) amd 3500 1gig RAM 160g b)amd 3700 1gig RAM 300g c) old pc 1.7ghz, 200g 512mb RAM

Option a is main pc , option b is sisters pc and option c is just a backup...

However I now need to backup all files on regular basis whats the best way I should go about this:

a) use option c as a server? I have never set one up is difficult? do I use windows server 2003?
b) or can I use an external storage device?

I was hoping to use a method which would automatically back my files up as I use my pc throughout the day, is this at all poss? Or would I need to run a prog each time I wanna backup?

All help and advise would be most appreciated..

Thanks in advance..

You've got a lot of options really. You don't need a server operating system like Win2k3 to turn a pc into a server. The term server just refers to its function as a computer that runs services for other computers.

In your case if you were to convert option c) to a backup server, assuming its already got an operating system, you would not need to change it. If its a windows operating system then you can just setup shared folders. For the actual process of backing up, you can use backup software or a simple batch script setup as a scheduled task will do the job also.

I would keep computer C as an xp machine, or linux. I can't see you spending 100's on windows 2003 personally unless you already have a copy.

Pop a backup share on it and then get something like syncback to backup your work. www.2brightsparks.com
