Please could I have recommendation for backup solutions for Windows 2008 R2. Used to use ntbackup with 2003 but it has been replaced by server backup in 2008. I was hoping R2 would mean an improvement to server backup but it still isn't as flexible as would hoped.

The solution needs to be reliable and relatively inexpensive.

Thanks

Reading through other threads I see a lot are using Backup Exec. If I am using this for a domain controller, what software would I require? I see there are a lot of different versions and agents.

Just having a look now, so what I need is Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 8.5 Server Edition?

I don't think there is any need for the Active Directory agent as 2008 R2 has a recycle bin.

Is that all I need to backup and restore a server if it fails? Does backupexec email the results of a backup job or do you need more software?

Thanks for your help.

No its just a few domain controllers. Using symantec configure wizard on their website they recommend:

Symantec Backup Exec 12.5 for Windows Servers License + Essential 12 Months Support
Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 8.5 Server Edition License + Essential 12 Months Support
Symantec Backup Exec 12.5 Agent for Active Directory License + Essential 12 Months Support

This is for if the server dies/place burns down/someone nicks it. Restoring AD objects isn't an issue as apparently 2008 R2 has a recycle bin for AD.

Just about to buy the software to backup a 2008 server. Could you confirm that SYMANTEC BACKUP EXEC 12.5 FOR WINDOWS SERVERS STD is sufficent to back up and do a bare metal restore? Thanks

You should get both Backup Exec 12.5 (BE) and Backup Exec System Recovery (BESR). I use 'em here, and they are fine. Once a month I let BESR update it's images. Otherwise, Backup Exec runs nightly, backing-up all data on the network.

Files deleted/corrupt/lost? Recover with BE
Server gone **** up? Bare metal recovery (to any h/w) with BESR
Bored? Recover BESR image to a virtual server, and play with a virtual copy of your production server(s) offline.

Apart from BESR, I've also used Sonicwalls CDP. The CDP is okay, but capacity/price was an issue for my purposes. I found Symantec's "bring your own h/w"-style more appealing than an appliance.

Do I need a BE and BESR licence for every server? I just tried Symantecs own product configuration wizard and it only said 1 BE licence but 6 BESR ones??

Ah so thats why the wizard listed just the 1 copy. can I install BE on a client and then deploy it from there? By deploying the agent to each server, can I still back it up fully?

Thanks for the help
